Our community thrives when every child has access to the support they need to succeed—whether it’s free school meals, financial aid, or programs that help first-generation college-bound students reach their potential. At Student U, we’ve seen how these resources transform lives, helping students overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams. But with growing challenges ahead, it’s more important than ever for us to come together and protect these vital services. Now is the time to ensure that every child has the opportunities they deserve and to build a brighter, more resilient future for all.
The Community Schools Team at Student U is all about bringing people together—students, families, schools, and community partners—to build stronger, more connected school communities. Whether it’s organizing events that celebrate culture, supporting academic growth, or making sure families have access to resources, this team is doing the behind-the-scenes work that makes a big difference. Their energy, creativity, and commitment shine through everything they do, and this month we’re excited to give a shoutout to some of the awesome people and moments that have been part of that work.
Highlighting Community School Work
New Hope Elementary: Black Excellence Fest
New Hope Elementary showed up and showed out for their 2nd annual Black Excellence Fest! With over 650 community members in attendance, the event was a vibrant celebration of culture, creativity, and community. More than 100 students took part, alongside 14 student organizations, 3 universities, and 12 local vendors. It was a joyful space full of pride, connection, and brilliance—an unforgettable day for the school and everyone who joined in.
Clarke Elementary:
Math Day
Clarke Elementary’s Math Day was a hit! Third graders got hands-on with fun and engaging math games, thanks to the awesome support from Vance County High School students. It was a great moment of cross-school connection—older students stepping up as mentors and helping younger ones build confidence with their math skills, all while having a great time.
Vance County High School:
Trip to DC
The 'Pass The Torch' trip to Washington, DC was a powerful experience for over 50 freshmen and seniors from Vance County High School. Co-created by the students themselves, the trip was more than just a journey—it was a chance for mentorship, leadership, and growth. Seniors passed on wisdom, freshmen stepped into new possibilities, and together they explored history, identity, and the future they’re building. Total transformation!
Central Elementary:
STEM
With support from the Central team and University Assisted Community Schools, students from Cedar Ridge High School are helping design an exciting new plan for Central’s STEM room. It’s all about teamwork, creativity, and making sure students have a space to explore, experiment, and dream big in science, tech, engineering, and math.
Celebrating Every Step:
Student Successes That Shape Our Future
Celebrating Student Success
Last week, we threw an All Stars–themed celebration to honor 56 of our incredible middle school students for their tremendous dedication and drive toward growth! These scholars made noticeable strides in their academic progress, with some even landing themselves on the A and A/B Honor Rolls.
To celebrate, students enjoyed a well-deserved afternoon filled with pizza and snacks, gaming stations, bracelet-making, glitter tattoos, zen coloring, and more. It was a joyful and memorable way to recognize their hard work and let them know just how proud we are. Keep shining, stars!
Harvesting Change: Bringing Food Justice Lessons to Life
This year, a group of our students has been part of Unbox, a Youth School Food Policy Council focused on food justice, advocacy, and community. Meeting twice a month, they’ve been learning about food systems, building leadership skills, and of course, sharing good meals together. Last week, they visited the DPS Hub Farm to tour the land, harvest fresh produce, and cook a meal as a team—bringing their learning to life in a powerful and delicious way.
Student U & the Durham Bulls
This week, we took 20 of our hardworking students to attend the Durham Bulls Education Day game, bringing classroom learning to life in a whole new way! The students were immersed in the sights, sounds, and excitement of the game, witnessing the thrill of live sports and the energy of the crowd. The highlight of the day? Wool E. Bull zooming around the field on his legendary go-kart, bringing extra fun to the experience! It was a fantastic day of learning and connecting with the Durham community, showing our students that education can take place in exciting and unexpected spaces.
